Alec Shklyar has had a lifelong passion for watching and playing sports, thanks in part to his family ties in Wisconsin.
A proud Green Bay Packers fan for as long as he can remember, Alec grew up watching games with his mother, whose entire extended family still lives in Wisconsin to this day. One of Alec’s fondest memories is when he watched the Packers win the Super Bowl in 2010, and he continues to watch every game faithfully.
In addition to watching games, Alec has played football, basketball, and tennis competitively and enjoyed each sport for different reasons. He loved the adrenaline rush that accompanied every Friday night football game, especially in that first exciting moment where he ran onto the field and into the lights. The rush was enough that Alec once kept going through an entire fourth quarter on a broken foot that would later require surgery. As a defensive back, he learned resilience and mental strength in not letting one pass completion get him down; instead he would use it as motivation to take the next pass into the other end zone. He was similarly driven as a basketball player because he loved the feeling of being part of a team that could do great things.
As for tennis, which Alec still plays now, the motivation comes from a different place: his desire to win and stand out as the best. Never afraid to take on a challenge, he loves the ability to go head-to-head with his biggest tennis rivals and rely on no one for success but himself. He also credits tennis as a great way for him to learn how to focus. Most people say that the hardest part about winning in tennis is actually earning that final point, and to close off a match requires both mental and physical concentration. He enjoys the challenge of grinding for every point in the heat of the summer, and pushing himself harder than he ever thought possible in order to come out on top.
Alec’s favorite players are Roger Federer, who has definitely earned his reputation as one of the greatest players of all time, and Jelena Janković.
As an active student working toward a career in finance, Alec currently plays recreational tennis with his father as his usual opponent. He is inspired to keep growing as a player because he wants to play the game throughout his life and someday, in the far future, he still sees himself being the best tennis player in his retirement community.
